Many gamblers ask how to stop gambling and save money

Gambling is harmless fun but it can be addictive to some gamblers

Those gamblers seek support when it is too late

Unfortunately they lose their families as it is very hard to live with someone who dumps money like lunatic

There are few affiliate links, if you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you

how to stop gambling and save money

That’s exactly how non gamblers perceive wasting money in Casinos

In this post, I’ll focus on how to stop gambling and save money so let’s begin with

    Contents  show

What are the common myths of gambling?

There are few common fallacies or myths whatever you like to call it

These fallacies about gambling are still alive and never fades like

I have my smart technique of winning

I’ve met many gamblers admitting they got smart techniques to make them win

    How? that’s impossible

If someone has got smart technique he’ll be a money machine

By the way, if you win for multiple times a big cash, the casino will expel you out

Do you remember Rain Man by Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise?

Tom Cruise increased his chance of winning and he was banned from entering Casinos

This is a movie, don’t live this dream

It is due to pay soon

If you are a slot machine addict, don’t think because someone before you were playing for substantial time without winning that you can take over and it is due to pay soon

Slot machines are not configured to let you win every nth time

I remember with my friends we tested one slot machine after big win and it is totally not consistent

Even if you win, you can’t tell if this slot machine is going to compensate you to cover your losses

Stop gambling and save money as slot machine is not an investment machine

I can double my money every time

I heard this from at least more than 5 different gamblers

Just double your money on Roulette or Poker tables and once you win you will compensate your loss

    Let’s make the calculation together

    $100 and if doubled, it is $200 then $400, $800, $1,600, $3,200, $6,400, $12,800, $25,600 and so on

Roulette as a game can take you 50 trials to win the bet on one specific number

But if you’re playing odd/even or green/red then your chance is of winning is 50/50

Let’s say you lose 4 times then you will bet with $1,600 as per the above

Who told you that at $1,600 you will collect enough money to cover your losses

What if I tell you that you put $1,600 and all gamblers put $400, what do you think?

Let’s say you are playing on one specific number to double the number to 20th times

That’s impossible because you would not afford to get this amount of money

Think about it and stop gambling to save your money

It is my lucky day today

I am sorry to tell you that you as a gambler mentally decide to make any day your lucky day

It happens that you receive a call from someone you like or hear a good news

You decide to think that it is your lucky day

Why is gambling bad for you?

To stop gambling and save money you have to realize why gambling is bad for you

Gambling has a harmful effect both to psychological and physical health

Gamblers may experience depression, anxiety and stress

Gambling is bad because in most case it turns to addiction

It is similar to the addiction of taking a drug or having a drink

What is worse than that, gambling has the power to alter you mood and state of mind

Anybody addicted to drug and alcohol needs to increase the dose to experience the same effect like before

Gambling is equivalent to drug and alcohol where gamblers need to gamble more to experience the same high moment or thrill

They think by continuing to increase their gambling they can win back their losses

    Why should you stop gambling?

Still not yet convinced to stop gambling and save your money

Well, read the below 6 reasons on why to stop gambling right now

Casinos have what is called house edge

House edge is the percentage of profit for each game played inside casinos

This is a predefined numbers calculated before

Slot machines for example, you can play up to 600 spins in an hour

This is the highest number of games with house edge up to 10%

This means player’s loss is 10%

A game like Texas hold’em has house edge as low as 2.2%

This means it is less losses than slot machines

Overall Casinos have team of mathematicians you can never beat their logic

    Gambling affects your mood

One day you can lose a lot of money while another day you don’t lose much

How can you guarantee yourself to keep your positive and go back to your normal life without really losing your mood

Let me tell you, it’s impossible, never heard of anyone being able to do that

    Gambling is addictive

Yes it’s true, gambling is addictive

How you know you are not already addicted to gambling

You can convince yourself that you are playing for fun but you are not

Prove it by stopping gambling and save your money now

You would lose your friends and family

Who would keep a good relationship with someone who is prone to be broke and lose money

People are creatures who like to maintain a healthy relationship

You don’t want anyone coming to you asking to borrow money

If this happens how can you make sure he won’t take that money to gamble again

Gambling waste a lot of time

    Many gamblers told me before

They report an average of 4 to 5 hours in every session they spend gambling

Gamblers are an easy target to robberies

Everyone going in or out of casino is a target to robbery

Robbers stalk casinos looking for winners before they ask for escort

    What is a gambling addict?

Gambling addiction is the uncontrollable urge to keep on gambling despite the fact you’re losing money

It is so dangerous that it may happen that some gamblers pledge their jewelries, watches or even their cars to get quick cash to gamble with

Always there are opportunists who hang in casinos to prey on those addictive victims

They know they won’t be able to pay back their loans

    What causes gambling addiction?

Just to let you know compulsive gambling is a kind of addiction

There are many reasons for what can cause your addiction to gambling

But don’t be afraid, you will not get abdicated from visiting the casino three or four times a year

Gambling addiction occur from something you build deep inside your mind

Like being desperate for money and you think you can get quick cash from gambling

Or your desire to experience the thrill and highs of those you imaged coming out of casinos with thousands of dollars

I’ll be fair with you, who doesn’t like this fake image

It can be the entertaining atmosphere you maintain inside casinos

You find yourself there as you enjoy every moment

Perhaps outside you feel bored and nothing fills your life

    How to overcome gambling addiction?

Compulsive gambling addiction affects 2-3% Americans with symptoms like irritable mood, pressured speech, decreased need for sleep and few other symptoms

To stop gambling and save money you have to overcome your gambling addiction

These are few considerations to stop gambling addiction

    Put limit to yourself

I cannot call myself a gambler at all

But I live in a place 2 hours away from Niagara falls

Anytime I go to the casino, I set a limit like $10 or $20 to spare and that’s it

You have to set a limit to yourself

This works best if you are not addicted yet to gambling

    Admit you have a problem

Number one solution to recovering from any addiction including gambling is admitting that you have a problem

If your family or friends force you to do that then you will not be cured

It has to come from inside you that you hate what you’ve become and you want to stop gambling and save money

    Seek professional help

There is something called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

Where the therapist and the addictive gambler works one on one to help the gambler sees the destructive behavior of gambling

And to overcome the gambling thoughts that possess your mind

    Join a support group

There are self help groups like Gambler’s Anonymous (GA) that uses different techniques to help compulsive addictive gamblers

Also there are other groups that help family members deal with their loved one

    Consider medication

In some cases psychiatrists often prescribes an antidepressant that can affect the serotonin system

Other drugs such as lithium and opiate antagonists like nalmefene

How to stop gambling and save money?

When I mention stop gambling and save money

I assume you are in a stage you can quit gambling using your own will

    You’re not addicted yet

Decide if gambling is really worth it

Think about what gambling brings to you

    Does it bring happiness?

Do you believe you are making money gambling?

My life will be boring without gambling

While all the assumptions are not true

But that’s your mind makes you think of

Compare it to what you will lose as money and social life being alone

Trust me on that, stop gambling and save money as it is not worth it

    Avoid temptation

Stay away from places where you can find casinos

What made this gambling addiction worse is that you can now gamble online

There are many online casinos that puts you in the gambling atmosphere

In that case, there are many software and apps that block gambling sites

At the end of this post, you will find a list of software that can help you avoid gambling

    Replace gambling with other activities

Since you decided to stop gambling you will experience boredom

You have to decide what other activities can make you feel fully engaged

Each Gambling session takes a lot of time so you want to fill that time with something that gives you the same thrill

It can be a sport or hobby you are really passionate about

Convince yourself that your losses are not recoverable

I’ve never seen anyone who was able to recover his losses by gambling again

Whatever you have lost just leave it behind your back

Stop gambling and save your money

Don’t take gambling as an excuse to recover previous losses

Tell your friends to self exclude you from casinos

This is a kind of challenge test you abide to it

Like telling your friends and family to slap you or spit on your face whenever they see you gambling

Some gamblers exaggerate with the punishment they tell their surroundings about

This trick has proven to be really worth it to stop you from gambling

    Identify your gambling triggers

Monitor all activities around you that trigger you to go for gambling

There are certain places or circumstances that put you in the mood of gambling

Like I mentioned earlier being bored can trigger you to go for gambling

Remember gambling now can be online so you don’t have to go to casinos

    Seek professional help

Again I said earlier if you are about to be addicted to gambling

But who knows, seek professional help to identify if you started to fall in compulsive gambling

You can start earlier before it is too late

What does gambling do to your brain?

There is a hormone called dopamine which is responsible for your happiness

Compulsive gambling stimulates your brain with this hormone

Every time you gamble your brain’s level of pleasure gets weakened

So your brain puts more pressure to push for more dopamine to trigger its reward system

    Can you get rich gambling?

    In the long term No

Gambling can make very few people rich under this circumstances like

You go to a casino and play let’s say Roulette on number zero

Let’s say you win and quit

Which is a very rare situation but in reality gamblers never get rich

Any money they game they will lose it by future gambling sessions

    Can a gambler be cured?

Unfortunately there is no specific cure from gambling addiction

Because this type of addiction starts from your brain which needs your own strong will and the help of a professional therapist

Admit that you have a problem then start as early as possible

Follow the steps outlined by your therapist and one day you can break free of this compulsive gambling

Are there apps to let you gamble for free?

I am not sure if gamble for free or with play money will help those weak spirit who are still recovering from compulsive gambling to entertain themselves

Or I am wrong and this will make things worse

Anyway there are so many apps that let you gamble for free like

1- Most of the online casinos have something called play money where you can play and never pay a dime

I cannot put myself in gambler’s shoe but I assume any gambler can have fun and not lose money – what do you think?

2- Play Lucktastic free app on your mobile

This app will let you scratch cards online if you win you get free PayPal money instantly

3- Willy Wonka slots free casino available on Android and iPhone

  • How To Cut Cost of Living And Household Expenses Right Away

I know it is hard to cut cost of living if you are not used to live frugally

But if you are serious about how to cut household expenses

Let me tell you it is never too late

There are few affiliate links, if you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you

You can start today by learning from the below tips

Remember no matter how many tips you read, you have to try few of them

    cut cost of living

But if you try one or two tips at a time you will get used to it

I know it will be hard to try all of them at once

Those sacrifices which you make won’t be sacrifices in the long run

It is similar to reducing my four spoons of sugar I used to add to my coffee

It was hard to go right away to half spoon but I took it gradually

Anyway let me start with the following

    Contents  show

    Use a family budget

Regardless of all the other tips, this is the master tip of all

If you can practice this one then you will be able to cut cost of living dramatically

But why? because if you create a family budget then you will be able to look at all expenses

Just by looking at all expenses you will be able to analyze where you can start saving

    Get out of debt

Getting out of debt is not going to cut cost of living only

It will relief you from the stress and many nights of losing your sleep

I cannot explain how great you will feel when you manage to get out of debt

    Buy generic brands

If you are serious about cutting cost of living then start with non brands products

Not only for non brands groceries but for everything

I started to ignore buying non brands apparel, electronics and all other things

Use a jar for your spare change

To be fair, this tip is not about saving a lot per month

    It is about being organised

I wrote a previous post about doing the penny challenge

Read it and see how much you will save annually

Don’t be fooled by any sales

I was at Costco when I saw a winter jacket on sale

It was very cheap and that jacket was really good

I was hesitant but I had to think about it

Unfortunately we buy so many things we don’t need because they go on sales

If you buy what you need on sale that would be grrat

A tip for you, always buy off season

Choose affordable rent or mortgage amount

I know it will be a surprise to you if I ask you the below

What is the percentage of your rent to your income?

I bet you would be able to answer this unless you checked it before

Below is an example of using my budget sheet which you can open in excel or free open source sheet

Below mortgage is 1960 and it is 27.62% to your income

how to budget by calculating percentages of expenses per income
I am using hypothetical numbers not really representing my family income

Good news is if you use my budget sheet in my products page you will be able to calculate all the percentages for all expenses

Use coupons and cash back apps

It is really bad to buy something and discover later that it was on sale with a coupon

Nowadays there are so many apps to help you not to miss these offers

For the cash back app, I love RakutenMr Rebates and MyPoints

Plan your meals with shopping list

I always say you can save money on grocery by using shopping list

You don’t have to use a sheet of paper for your shopping list

With AnyList mobile app you can type your grocery items

This is the app I use as it integrates with Amazon Alexa

I love it because if I ran out of grocery item or I remember something to buy

I call Alexa and ask her to add it to my shopping list and it will be there on the app

Use your leftover dinner for lunch at work

To be fair when I was single I used to buy lunch at work

On average it costs me around $10 and that’s around $240 a month

Nowadays I am taking my leftover dinner to eat as my lunch next day

It is up to you but you can cut cost of living a lot by eating left over dinner for lunch

    Cut alcohols and soft drinks

I should say reduce alcohols and cut soft drinks

To be realistic I drink alcohols on special occasions

But there is a bid difference between consuming alcohol every day and only when you are inviting friends and family to your house

Think about it when it comes to soft drinks it is not healthy

Practice replacing your soft drinks with natural juice you make it at home

    Join wholesale club membership

Although wholesale club memberships cost you money to join

But it saves you money in the long term

There are so many products there cheaper than all grocery stores

Anyway I recommend to check your annual purchases and check your total spending

I upgraded my membership to $120 per year and this saved me money

Why? I used to pay $60 with no cash back then I upgraded and paid $120

By doing that I collected $101 cash back so my membership costs me $19

Reduce dinning out to special occasions only

I am not against dinning out, I keep it to the minimum

I recommend living frugally but not living stingily

    Find cheap gas stations

I have a gas station near my home cheaper with at least 4 cents

Anyway for anyone who is not aware of a cheap gas station in your area

I recommend to install GasBuddy app on you mobile

You can use GetUpside to collect 25 cents on every gas fill up

Also you can fill up gas from wholesale club membership when possible

    Know your wants and needs

Your need is anything that keeps you alive like paying for your shelter or your drugs

Your want is buying a new scooter or replacing your car because you’re bored of it

Cut cable and replace it with IPTV

I will not ask you to cut cable and not watch TV

I recommend to invest in IPTV where you can pay $30 a year

Not only you will save money but you will be watching a vast range of channels

Cut cost of living by giving up your home phone

I am a true believer of using VOIP (Voice Over IP) phone

The amount of money you save is great

If you decide to use cell phone only that’s a good decision too

Buy used items instead of taking a loan

From my previous experience I was paying $530 for a car loan

This was in the past, nowadays I buy a reliable used cars without any loans

Not only for cars but for electronics you can buy refurbished TV

Or you can even buy used items from Facebook Marketplace

Save fund for your gifts and parties

Birthdays and all special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas are not a surprise

Wise families plan for them like keeping your store gift cards in a drawer to buy gifts for birthdays

You can also plan for it in your budget

  • Good Money Habits To Learn And Apply in Your Life Right Now

When it comes to good money habits, let me ask you a question

Are you enforcing good financial habits or not?

if you are not sure what is good or bad money habit

There are few affiliate links, if you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you

Read my post below as I collected all the good money habits under one roof

We all commit few bad money habits in our lives

    good money habits

What is most important is to learn from our mistakes and never let it happen again

Now let me start with the below

    Contents  show

Create a budget and stick to it

If I speak to you for 10 days to convince you the importance of building a budget

It would be in vain if you don’t try it for yourself

I know you may think, what is a budgeting?

Well, I will ask you a question and be honest to yourself

Do you know what is your mortgage or rent percentage to your income?

I bet you only those who maintain a family budget can answer this question

Think about all other expenses like groceries and gas

If you have a budget, you would be able to monitor your expenses

And try your best to stick to the numbers you assigned before you start the month

how to budget by calculating percentages of expenses per income
I am using hypothetical numbers not really representing my family income

As shown above if you use one of my budget sheet in excel or even word and PDF document, you will be able to calculate the percentage of every expense according to your total income

    Pay yourself first

Paying yourself first is one of the top good money habits

    What does it mean?

Simply you deduct money from every paycheck when you get paid

Before you start spending your income to cover expenditures

You take that deducted money and force it into investment channels

By doing that, there is no chance of facing any deficit of meeting your deducted obligatory amount

    Set financial goals for yourself

Not setting financial goals for yourself is similar to going camping without tent

I was on the phone with my financial advisor and I asked him this question

How much do I need to contribute to obtain $100,000 in 10 years for kids’ education

His reply was very rapid, just by investing $5,000 annually with 7% interest

My money will be doubled in 10 years

My idea is you have to decide how much you want after 10 years or when you retire assuming you have decided when to retire

Auto transfer money to your saving account

Nowadays all banks have the feature to auto deduct a percentage or specific amount on your paycheck day

Assuming it is biweekly on Friday or whatever, you bank can auto transfer your agreed upon amount to your saving account

I know I spoke earlier about paying yourself first but auto transfer is essential if you plan to buy big item like car or electronics

    Buy generic brands

I discussed before in previous posts the concept of buying generic brands

Especially when saving money on groceries

I want to take this advice to apply it on everything

Take for example, electronics like TV if you buy a generic brand instead of the well known brands

You could be saving 50% of the TV price

I will tell you an idea, I was hesitant to buy generic brands like you

One day I decided to buy generic brand and add extended warranty on top of that

Save money coming from side hustles, bonus and tax refund

If you are making money from rental property or side hustles then save that money

All financial advisors tell you to imagine that you are not making that money

I know it is easy to say that but it is hard to apply

I know a lot of people start making commitment before getting their bonus

While others they do the same for their tax refunds

Again this is one of the top good money habits if you are able to apply it on yourself

Use a jar for your spare change

I know what you would think

You think I am acting cheap and making an issue out of the spare change

Don’t under estimate what you can do with your spare change

I know you will change your mind especially if you read my penny saving challenge

Read it and see what you will be able to accumulate in saving at the end of the year

Have fun with money saving challenges

If you are one of those who enjoy taking few challenges

Then I encourage you to apply one of these 52 weeks money saving challenges

To lessen the burden with so many money saving schema

You can simply use your money saving challenges towards saving for big items

Don’t be fooled by any sales

Recently I was in one of the big box stores, I noticed a good winter jacket on sale

I have to admit, the price was very enticing, I held it in my hand

Started to use all of my logic to resist buying it

Well I did that because I know I have more than 5 winter jackets

And buying a new one especially during the pandemic is really a big waste of money

I acted rational but I know not everyone will act the same

    Build an emergency fund

Building an emergency fund is one of the good money habits that can take you to the next level in your financial life

It is a very simple financial habit that few people know about

You simply save $1000 or more on a separate saving account

It has to be easy to liquidate and hard to reach

Are you confused? I will explain it again

Make your emergency fund money in a way similar to cash

A saving account that can make you a little interest but not in bond or stocks

You should be able to use it in case of emergency

Also know what you own and not lose its value when liquating in case of stocks or mutual funds that can lose part of its value

Keep it out of reach by having the money in separate bank account so you make it hard for you to touch the money

I will leave the reach part for you to decide it on your own

Plan your meals with shopping list

Nothing can save you money better than using a shopping list

It can be on a sheet of paper or you can use a mobile app

I actually prefer to use a mobile app called AnyList

It integrates with Amazon Alexa and this make my life so easy

If I remember any thing to buy before going for my weekly grocery shopping trip

I just call Alexa to add it to my shopping list app

    Stay out of debt

I believe getting the feeling of relief after paying of your debt is the second best feeling

It comes next after the feeling of someone telling you that he loves you or the feeling of your first kiss

If you are one of those who are really in debt

Do yourself a favor and read what I wrote on how to get out of your debt

I was in debt but once I got out of it, I will make sure never to fall again in debt

Similar to being cured from addition or successfully quitting smoking after a long battle of trials

Practice living on less than what you make

This is what we call it living frugally

I know when I speak about it to people close to me

They make fun of it and see it as a cheap and useless way of saving money

I am a true believer of living a frugal live

Remember I live a frugal not a stingy living

What is the difference between being frugal and not stingy?

Well, I go with my family to restaurants every now and then

Me and my wife can order a family plate for 2 persons to save money

So I am not against to eating out but it is just a simple practice to save money

Also I use my own bags when doing grocery shopping

I hope you get the idea of living frugally

It is one of the good money habits that you need to adapt and practic

    Invest early on retirement plan

I started investing on retirement when I was 37 years old

After wasting 15 years that’s why I wish everyone can avoid my mistake

Good news is if this is your case and you haven’t invested in retirement saving yet

It is never too late, start now and fast track by contributing more into your retirement account

This is one of the mandatory good money habits you have to do

Don’t forget to invest in kids’ education

I invest way more in kids’ education than in both my and my wife’s retirement plans

I cannot imagine seeing both of my 2 kids not being able to join college because they cannot afford it

Of if they join they graduate with a huge debt that each more than 10 years of their life

I know some parents don’t care but that’s not me

Buy used items instead of taking a loan

I admit I learned this good financial habit the hard way

My previous car I bought it new from a dealership on 5 years installment

With I believe interest 1.7% APR – Annual Percentage Rate

    Monthly payment of $530

  • How To Afford Moving Out With No Money From Parents House

Are you lingering in your parents’ house and thinking how to afford moving out

Before you rush the decision, did you ask yourself how to move out with no money

Perhaps it is not the wise decision to pursue at the moment

Your parents endure many sacrifices just to see you successful in your life

There are few affiliate links, if you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you

Moving out in a way that causes you to incur debt won’t make them happy

I am sure about this feeling or at least I will speak about myself as a parent

Adult Son Moving Out Of Parent’s Home

Below I will discuss steps to consider before moving out and settle in your own home

    Contents show

1- Stick to a tight budget

First step on how to afford moving out is to stick to a budget

Your parents were paying the mortgage or rent without bothering you with details

I heard stories about sons who moved out from their parents’ home

Then they realized they are paying more than 40% of their income just to cover rent

So start now by learning how to create your own budget

And start helping your parents by paying some bills out of your own pocket

2- Set a timeline for moving out

Before you think how to afford moving out

You have to think about a timeline on when you will be able to take this action

There are so many factors that can affect your moving out date decision

It can be a new job you were accepted

Or it can be a matter of time till you save the first and last month rental deposit

Also you may need a solid credit score or guarantor

If your parents can help you to act as a guarantor – just check with them

3- Get a job or increase your income

I know it may sounds obvious but some graduate rush up the decision of moving out of their parents’ house

What I meant by that – they work a minimum salary job and because they seek the freedom they get themselves in trouble of falling into debt

They forget that they still have part of their students loan to pay

Start first by securing a job in your field of study and if necessary work another job

You are young and energetic so afford moving out with extra money in your pocket

The more you pay your student loan, the best for you in the long run

    4- Find a roommate

If you cannot pay full rent in big cities then find a roommate

There is nothing wrong about that even if you get paid well

Think about a roommate so you can put your 50% saved in rental towards your student loan

5- Rent your room and pay your parents

Let’s say now you have a budget and you are very dedicated to this budget

You got a decent job and have a plan on how to afford moving out

This is something you have to do to show your parents how grateful you are

Speak to your parents and ask them to make a monthly contribution for your room

Make them feel responsible as I want you to remember the following

Your parents are still going to be your parents – no matter what

You will still keep the good relation and take care of them when they get old

I always believe in the way you treat your parents will be the way you will be treated when you get old

Finally, if you like this post then as a new graduate you may need to save money buying a new car

  • How To Save 10000 In a Year And Get 10,000 Year Chart

Did you ask yourself how to save 10000 in a year?

If yes and you are serious then you can make your dream come true but how?

If you went through the 52 money savings challenge I listed there how to save 10000 in 52 weeks or the penny saving challenge successfully then you would be familiar with that kind of savings

My point is before you start saving $10,000 in a year, it is highly recommended to practice saving less amount than that like $5,000

There are few affiliate links, if you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you

saving $10,000 in a year challenge

What I wanted to say how to save 10000 in one year is like a marathon where you practice with less distance

Below I will discuss the main points on how to put yourself on track on the 10000 saving challenge

    Contents show

    Pay yourself first

One of the best way on how to save 10000 in one year is to pay yourself first

Paying yourself first means to save and invest what you cut when you get paid

It is not a magic but if you cut from your paycheck, let’s say 10% then manage what is left is way easier than trying to save your 10% with all your paycheck money

Find a goal and stick to it

Nothing can force you to save 10000 in 1 year without a goal

A goal can be saving for buying a home instead of renting, buying a new car or replacing your existing one

I always believe on writing your goals and hang it to the wall or put it on your fridge

Break your goal to small traceable plans

I talked about the importance of setting your goals

I find one of the best way on how to save 10000 dollars in a year is to break your goal to small traceable plans

For example, if you start by saving $830 in one single month and you manage to make it through

There is a high chance that you can reach out to your planned goal

Keep in mind when setting up a small traceable plans that not all months are the same

For example, in summer you can save less than $800 and still compensate it on other months

    Celebrate your success

Nothing in this world is better than enjoying your success

Don’t let it pass by without celebrating it

If you don’t pamper yourself and enjoy your own ability to reach out for your goals

Then nobody will do it for you

    Stick to a budget

One of the best way of how to save 10000 dollars in a year is by creating a budget for your household and sticking to it

Actually when creating a family budget you will realize all the gaps you have in your budget

For example, if you lay down all the numbers and analyze your expenditures you may spot some expenses that you can cut immediately

Without budgeting it is impossible to retrieve all your expenses in your head and find ways to save money

I hope I was able to convince you

    Cut unnecessary expenses

I can say boldly it is almost impossible in North America to have a household with no expenses to cut

Check your monthly expenses and you may find a lot of things to cut and you are totally not aware of

One of the best way on how to save 10000 in 1 year is by cutting recurring expenses that you don’t need or not aware of

Yes I used to have so many expenses I was not aware of like magazine subscriptions or home phone you are not using

It can even be a maintenance plan that is being added to your heating bill like the protection plans – may be you are not aware of

Make room for fun to avoid burnout

Although I was discussing possible way to cut expenses

I am totally against cutting all entertainment

Do I have a paranoia? definitely no

I am not against having some fun for yourself but I am against exaggerating in your entertainment spending

That’s why I recommend to keep some entertainment to cheer you up

An example in my life, I am a coffee addict and I was buying Starbucks coffee daily

I monitored my spending and I realized I can reduce my consumption

At least I can reduce this expense and keep reducing but I would keep it for my own leisure

    Pursue a side hustle

Although you can reduce your expenses and cut your unnecessary ones, you can do that to a certain limit

On the other side, you can increase your income with unlimited cap

That’s why I wrote so many posts about side income like

  • How to Save 3000 In 3 Months with free printable chart

So many people ask me how to save 3000 in 3 months and is it possible

Yes saving $3000 in 3 months is totally possible

But you must have the right mindset, planning, will power and sacrifice

All of the above are required together

Like having the right ingredients for a dish along with the steps to use those ingredients

There are few affiliate links, if you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you

I will list below the journey to save 3000 in 3 months

Detailed by how much you can save on every expenditure

I will begin with the following

    Contents show

Why saving money for yourself is very crucial

    Think about the below statement

What you are able to buy today with the money in your hand, you will not be able tomorrow – tomorrow is a metaphor for future time

Assuming you spend all of your income every month with no saving then expect to

1- Fall in debt if you face a financial crisis like recession and you get laid off

Or pandemic like COVID-19 where companies are obliged to lay off employees

    2- Miss saving for retirement

Unfortunately those who retired without savings found it tough to survive only with the government pension

Actually some of them went to look back for part time or even full time jobs again

3- Get challenged due to unforeseen expenses like dental or medical bill not covered by your insurance or unexpected car repair

That’s why those who save for their emergency fund are highly protected against all of the above

4- Miss preparing for their kids’ education

I can easily sacrifice something I need for myself

But It is hard feeling to see that I cannot pay for my child education

Because I am not well prepared for it

5- Not able to replace your car if you have to

Me and my wife drive 2 cars, they are not purchased at the same year

Having said that so if I buy a used car I will plan for the next car purchase within the next 3 years

6- Have a life full of stress

Yes don’t convince yourself that you will live paycheck to paycheck and still have your own peace of mind

If you are then sorry to accuse you of being irresponsible and idiot

    Examine your income

One of biggest mistake when you think about your income is to

Think about your income for you and your spouse as the amount agreed upon annually like 60K

You miss applying taxes to your salary so you miss the term take home pay

Another mistake is thinking about take home pay as the only source of income

What about any income coming from government like child support

What about your annual bonus and tax refund money during tax season

Again to save 3000 in 3 months, you have to assess your income properly

And not miss any source of income coming from side hustle or whatever

    Analyze your credit or debt

First you have to understand the basic concept of saving

It doesn’t make sense to save money while you are in deep debt

I mean by deep debt anything that can eat your saving and still leave you in deficit

If you have $1000 in debt you can save 3000 in 3 months while paying your debt

I give you an example as I am having a credit with home depot

Me and my wife always upgrade our home and I have the home depot credit card

Sometimes home depot sends a promotion to pay any lump sum purchase of over $299 on 18 months

These credit is a kind of debt that we have to pay back

But it will not hinder us from saving money

Identify how you are spending your income

I bet that you can answer this question below on top of your head

What is the percentage of your mortgage/rent according to your total income

To be fair, I realized if you don’t build a monthly budget

It is impossible to keep track of your spending and stay on top of where your income goes to pay all of your expenses

I will keep saying it over and over

You have to create your family budget to keep track of money

    Pay yourself first

Top action to adapt to help you save 3000 in 3 months is to pay yourself first

Meaning you decide on specific amount to deduct automatically from every pay check

    Cut spending on discretionary expenses

Do you remember when I mentioned earlier about saving 3000 in 3 months

I told you it requires will power and sacrifice

Why I am telling you that

Well I love Starbucks, I found I pay around $80 a month buying their coffee

I did not cut completely my Starbucks coffee but I reduced it to $30 a month

I realized if I use the Starbucks app, I will accumulate points toward free coffee

Better than nothing also you can join Swagbucks to get $5 bonus

Which you can redeem towards any gift cards

And with few daily tasks you can accumulate enough points for to redeem against a vast variety of gift cards

Resist clearance/on sale – know your needs vs wants

Before I advise you I have to admit I was fooled into buying so many things

All the things I don’t need I buy it when it goes on clearance or on sale

For example, I don’t need to buy a shoe but I notice a high end brand is offering a clearance with price drop like crazy

I end up paying $80 for original shoe price of $240 that I don’t need in the first place

This led me to understand the difference between needs and wants

Needs are what you cannot survive without like shelter, food, transportation

Wants are all things that we pay luxuriously like clothes and GYM membership

    Save money on grocery bills

Actually all of the above are just theoretical words

To save 3000 in 3 months I will start with a plan to list amounts you can save

These amounts should sum up to exceed $3000 within the 3rd months as not all savings apply to everyone

According to USDA Center for Nutrition Policy

An average US family spend around $770 on grocery per month

Where according to Global News in Canada

Canadians spend $880 on grocery per month

For the full list of saving money on groceries every month

Let me show you how much to save each month for the 3000 in 3 months challenge

    Buy no brand grocery items

You can easily save $15 per week which comes to $60 per month

You can save $180 within 3 months

    Buy cheap meat cuts

Definitely there are so many cheap meat cuts that can save you money

You can easily save $25 per week which comes to $100 per month

You can save $300 within 3 months

    Eat meat every other day

This really will save you a lot but I know not everybody can do it

If you make your menu to have chicken more than you eat meat, you will save too

You can easily save $150 per month which comes to $450 within 3 months

Eat leftover food instead of buying lunch at work

I pay in Toronto an average of $10-12 if I buy lunch from outside

You can easily save around $200 which comes to $600 within 3 months

Buy from supermarkets that do price match

I know nobody has time to check flyers

You can use Flipp or reebee to quickly browse your items on your shopping list

Locate the cheapest price and ask the store to do price match

You can save a minimum of $5 per week or $20 per month

This comes to $60 within 3 months

Get cash back using grocery apps

IbottaSavingstarCheckout 51Receipt Hog and Krazy Coupon Lady are good mobile apps that make money for you

Which comes to $30 within 3 months

    Save money on shopping

Shopping can be not only for clothes but for a different varieties of household items

You can always check for any items in dollar store before you buy it somewhere else

    Replace drugs with generic ones

Ask your family doctor to provide you with the generic drug

Most of the cases generic drug is 50% cheaper

I can boldly say you can save easily $10 per month which is $30 within 3 months

Buy some items from dollar store instead of regular store

This option is hard to estimate

But I found that buying some items like crafts and some kids toys can easily save $20 to $25 per month for me

Expected saving is $75 within 3 months

    Shop out of the season

Of course buying winter coats after winter and summer clothes beginning of winter can save you really good money

I will take a very minimum amount to apply here

You can save $15 within the 3 months – I think this is less than expected

Buy used items instead of new ones

This can be starting from electronics to clothes, shoes or even toys

I don’t want to limit you to certain categories

I found strollers on Facebook Marketplace for $30 while I bought it for $300

You can consider Facebook MarketplaceCraigslist or even eBay for buying used items

I can give $30 per month saving which is equivalent to $90 within 3 months

Pay with cash back credit card

There are 2 types of credit card that gives you cash back

No annual fee but less cash back percentage like 1%

My advice if you plan to go for no annual fee is compare all different credit cards

I know American Express offers 1.25% on everything

Annual fee with high cash back percentage like 4-5%

Do your match and check what you can get each month from all your purchases

Then subtract the monthly contribution for the annual fee

For example, if your annual fee is $120

So you pay $10 per month as a monthly fee for using this cash back credit card

I can say you can make $15 per month equivalent to $45 within 3 months

Save money on dining out and restaurants

I know going to restaurants is not a way to escape cooking

But also it is a way to break the routine

Especially after a hard week at work and waiting for a good weekend

On the other hand-side, those who don’t eat at restaurant expect to save a lot

If your average dinning out is twice a month

I expect you can save $150 a month which comes to $450 within 3 months

    Save money on entertainment

Entertainment cannot be cut but you can replace it with alternatives

I am realistic and I know I cannot live without watching TV

I need the cable and I need to buy books so here is what you can do

    Replace the cable with IPTV

If you pay cable you know it is around $50 per month

I found that I can pay $30 per year for IPTV which is less than $2.5 a month

You can easily save $150 within 3 months

    Cut the GYM membership

Here is another $40 per month to save

If you can replace GYM membership with walking or doing your workout on a used treadmill at home

You can easily save $120 within 3 months

Get rid of your home phone

This is not much to save but what is the point of paying $15 a month while you can use your cell phone

You can use VOIP phone instead like I pay $35 per year for Magic Jack phone

You can easily save $45 within 3 months

    Negotiate your bills

If you cannot cancel a certain subscription like the internet

You can hire a company to negotiate your bill on your behalf

In US, you can use AskTrimBillSmartBillCutterzBillFixers and Bill Shark

In Canada, you can use Bill Busters

Expected to save minimum $10 per month which is $30 within 3 months

Cut your morning drive thru coffee

Starbucks daily morning coffee costs me around $80 per month

I would say if you are buying it on weekdays that’s an average of $60 per month

You can save $180 within 3 months

Buy Kindle version or borrow books from public library

I love reading at least I buy one book per month

I found that getting Kindle version saves me 50%

Any book for $20 you can get it for $10 if you buy its Kindle version

I found that so many books I planned to buy where found in my local public library

Anyway you can save $10 per month which is $30 within 3 months

    Stop buying alcohols and cigarettes

This type of saving all depends on your consumption

Some people buy beer cans while others add liquors and wine bottles

I would say you can save $50 per month which is equivalent to $150 within 3 months

    Save money on utilities

It is hard to measure this kind of saving as it is intangible

Plus you don’t spend on utilities

You just pay bills like water and electricity

Although I detailed a long post on how to save on electricity

But I will focus on what is significantly putting money in your pocket

Replace your bulbs with LED one

I am not really an expert to speak about how much you can save

Taking the minimum I would say you save $5 per month

This is equivalent to $15 within 3 months

Use major appliances when it is low peak period

This is something I measured myself

I bought power watt consumption from Amazon and plugged it to a desktop PC

I found this PC consumes $18 per month if running 24/7

This means you can save $20 per month which is $60 within 3 months

Turn off Air conditioner when not at home

I will not put an amount here

Please make sure to turn your air conditioner off when not at home

I am using a Nest smart thermostat which I can turn on my air conditioner before I arrive home

    Use smart thermostat

    Ignore the amount for now

When I started using Nest thermostat I was able to save on my bill

    Clean clogged air ducts

Without doubt clogged air ducts put much effort on your heating/cooling system

Cleaning your air ducts definitely save you money on your bill

Side hustle for some extra income

Beside all the above savings towards the $3000 challenge in 3 months

Working on a side hustle will make cash for you out of your take home pay

Offer a baby sitting for a friend or relative for $15 an hour – minimum 2 hours

If you don’t feel comfortable talking about money with relatives then ignore it

It is not the end of the world

You can work on a side hobby like making bracelets, cooking, painting, fixing laptops..etc

Advertise yourself in your local community through Facebook Marketplace

You can work on Uber or Lyft weekend only for 2 hours

If you can make $50 per week, that’s $200 per month

You can easily make $600 within 3 months

  • Drowning In Debt – Follow My Step by Step Guide To Beat Debt Now

Drowning in debt is really harsh situation that can lead to anxiety and insomnia

I know how it feels when you are falling deep in debt

There are few affiliate links, if you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you

Because I passed through this feeling and I had to pony up my debt

Believe it or not, paying your debt requires a determination, plan and a will to start a new commitment

    drowning in debt
    a man drowning

If I visualize it, I will draw a man climbing a steep mountain but once you start you would definitely reach the top

In this post, I want to share my experience on how to pay your debt fast

    Contents  show

What does drowning in debt mean?

Drowning in debt simply means you owe a lot of money to creditors

In today’s economy, usually people owe debts to financial organizations like banks

It is very hard to reschedule its terms or reduce the interest rates

Sometimes it can lead to foreclosure and freezing your assets if you are not able to pay your debt in time

If this happens, you declare bankruptcy and spend around 7 years living with no credit until you are allowed to start building a new credit again

Does unpaid debt ever go away?

First, there is something called statute of limitations it is simply a time limit

For example, in Ontario, Canada it is 2 years

In other states, it can be up to 7 years

If this time period passes, debt collector will not sue you in court

But that doesn’t mean that your debt will go away, debt collectors will trouble you frequently to pay it

Beside it will negatively affect your credit score and rating

To summarize it, statute of limitations can help you not be sued

But your debt will not disappear

You will still have to pay it or it will leave a black mark on your credit score

How much debt is too much debt?

There is something called Debt to Income ratio and abbreviated as DTI

DTI is a percentage of how much you owe compared to how much you earn

If your DTI is 43% it will be hard for you to get Mortgage approval

Usually DTI of 36% is acceptable but it should be lower than that

What to do if you are drowning in debt?

I remember when I got married in 2010, I was working at Walmart with a minimum wage

At the same time I had to buy furniture and few appliances

My point is falling in debt was inevitable

    I had no other choice

I am not sure if I can say I was drowning in debt

But I know that I followed most of the steps below

    1) Make a list of all your debts

This step is crucial, it will keep you motivated and provide you with a payment plan

Create an excel or google sheet as shown below

List all of your debts under column A and their equivalent minimum payment under column B

Add interest rate under column C and amount owed under column D

pay off debt fast by listing all your debts

The plan is to pay more on the highest interest rate so you minimize your accumulated interest

Dave Ramsey has an idea to pay more on the lowest debts to finish them while paying the minimum to all debts

After you finish your smallest debts you will get motivated

Use your momentum and direct your payment which was used to finish your smallest debt to pay the next one

    2) Create a budget

To build a realistic budget based on your income you have to collect all your expenses made on your debit and credit cards for the last 3-6 months

Sort all your expenses into fixed like mortgage or rent

While other expenses are variables like utilities, gas and groceries

After you come up with your real amounts for each expense

You can either keep using your credit cards and keep track of what you spend on each expense category – this is one option

Or you can leave your credit cards at home and start using the cash envelope system

    3) Set new goals and plans

I will tell you a secret about those who were able to pay their debts

When they were asked about how they manage to fight their debts

Most of them used to have a solid plan written on paper and visible to them

    Financial Goals Roadmap
    writing down your financial goals

The above is my financial goals roadmap, I have it in my download page

    4) Stop using credit cards

It is really hard to track your expenses when using your credit cards

Think about it, you use a plastic card which can pay for any amount

But if you use the cash envelope system you will be cautious with your spending

    5) Cut your expenses

After completing your budget, it will open your eyes where you spend your money

The first round of cutting your expenses is supposed to be easy

You can cut your fast food and dinning out

Also your drive thru coffee and many more

Your second round is to cut your luxury items if you have the will like your GYM membership

    6) Prioritize paying debt with high interests first

There are 2 methods to tackle your debt

Either to put more money into high interests or smallest debts

Actually Dave Ramsey is the one who suggests to pay the small debt first

He calls it the snow ball effect

    7) Finish paying lowest balance first

    As I said earlier, if I have 2 debts let’s say $7,000 and $6,400

I wouldn’t consider $6,400 to be small debt

If I have $7,000 and $500 then I would tackle the $500 to finish it

    This will boost your energy

    8) Double up on payments

If you are paying a debt and it happens that you finish it

You use its money to pay the next targeted debt

Dave Ramsey describes it like the snow ball rolling to crush your debt

    9) Use bonus and tax refund to pay down debts

If you are expecting a bonus or tax refund, this is a good opportunity to pay it towards your debt

Also if you are not aware during the year you will get 2 extra payments

What I wanted to say is to use any extra money towards your debt

    10) Pay more than just the interest to overcome being overwhelmed with debt

Paying just the interest will not finish your debt

You will keep paying your debt forever

The only way is to pay the interest and a big portion of the principal

    11) Sell unused belongings

This practice should not take long

Go into every room and check what you can get rid of

Starting from electronics to personal items like sun glasses or watches

You can sell these belongings on Facebook Marketplace for cash

You will get load of people in your area looking to buy what you have

Your other option is to use eBay

    12) Cancel unnecessary subscriptions

Go and take a look at your recurring subscriptions on your credit card

I did this practice before on PayPal and I found 2 subscriptions I don’t need

    13) Negotiate or lower your bills

Look for all subscriptions where it is hard to cancel like your cell phone plan

Do your shop around to see if you can find a competitive rate from another provider

Take this rate to your current provider and see if they can beat it

Most of the time, they will do much better to keep you as a loyal customer

What is even better, try to look if you really need this plan or you can lower it down

For example, your plan can have 10 GB of data while you usually consume 5 GB

You can downgrade your plan and pay less

    14) Be satisfied with what you currently have

Don’t ever compare yourself to your friends and family

You don’t know their circumstances and what they bear in their lives

Be content with what you have and focus on your debt payment

you have to be happy with what you got

Always be positive and look for good reason in bad situations

May be being in debt is to teach you a lesson to live a frugal life

    15) Avoid committing to new debt

While you are paying your debt, try not to commit to any new debt

Even if it is of small amount like buying recliner chairs on credit or installments

You should put on hold anything and focus on your needs like shelter, food and transportation

    16) Analyze your shopping habits

Analyze what makes you spend money on your wants

Do you hang out with your friends and so you spend lot of money on dinning out or drinks outside

May be you have spare time and so you spend your time at shopping malls

Usually when you buy anything which is on great sale, you always don’t need it on the first place

best ways to save money on shopping

    17) Find a side hustle to increase your income

Remember expenses can be lowered to a reasonable amount

On the other side, increasing your income has not cap

Try to find a side hustle that can make you money to beat your debt

I recommend to read the below

How to Make an Extra 1000 a Month From Home Doing Easy Side Hustles

    18) Volunteer for a good cause

This will not pay your debt but it will make you feel lucky with what you have

Although you are drowning in debt but there are others who don’t have shelter

    19) Overcome your addiction

It is time to overcome your addiction

If you smoke or drink alcohol a lot, it is time to give up

I know it is hard to give up, this will not only improve your health

But it will give you a great confidence that will stay with you a lifetime

    20) Buy only your needs not your wants

Do you know the difference between your needs and wants

If not, it is time to know now, your needs is the essential things that keep you alive

Like your shelter, food (not all kinds of food) and transportation

Your wants are all the things you can put on hold like clothes (only essential ones) and you still can survive

    21) Learn basic financial knowledge

You need to learn the basics that’s what you need to know

I want you to know the difference between assets and liabilities

Go ahead and read my post I wrote about personal financial literacy

Also I recommend reading these books called the budgeting habit or Financial peace planner by Dave Ramsey

    22) Be positive and stay motivated

Don’t let drowning in debt put you down

Believe in yourself and your abilities

Say loudly I can overcome my debt and one day I will be debt free

be positive and stay motivated to pay debt quickly

Don’t get despaired or you will lose hope

You need to keep your motivation high to overcome your debt

    23) Speak to your bank or credit counselor for free

Taking decision to fight your debt is really a good step towards being debt free

But first, think about going to your bank and ask about your options

May be you can get a home equity line of credit to use its money to pay all of your debt

Usually it is a credit of very low interest

Other option is to speak to credit counselor for free to see your options

    24) Get a consolidated loan

Did you receive one day your credit cards offer to transfer any balance to them for some days usually one year term with no interest

Actually these type of offers are really good if you plan to move a specific amount you plan to pay within a year

Also you can get a consolidated loan to pay all or some of your debt where you get lower interest rate than what you currently pay

    25) Refinance your mortgage

You own your home – great you have a great chance to apply for home equity line of credit

This is one of the lowest interest loans – you can use it to pay your debt

    26) Save on groceries

Grocery is one of the flexible expenses that you have full control on

You just have to know how and that’s why I recommend you to read my previous post on how to save money on grocery

How do I get out of debt with no money?

Actually this is a very tricky question

I assume you are drowning in debt but you are living paycheck to paycheck

It is similar to asking how can you untie the robe around your body from the chair you are sitting on without using your hand

First, I want you to be honest with yourself

Make sure to live according to what your income is

And learn from your lesson and avoid future debt at all costs

Find a second job or side hustle

You know I told you before to find a side hustle

But this time you have no option

Go and look for a way to make more money

I heard a story of someone who used to work for 12 hours during the weekend at a gas station and use that money to pay his debt

It took him 30 months to kill his debt living frugally and on the very minimum

At the end, he is debt free and looking forward to build his future

Start with selling your luxurious items

This is one of the way to pursue if you are overwhelmed with debt

You and your partner should be aware of how you are drowning in debt

Both of you are in the same boat

There is nothing wrong if you can sell your household jewelries

Actually you won’t pawn it using pawn shops as you won’t be able to return it back

You go and sell it and pay partial amount of your debt

Ask for money from your first degree relatives

I know it will be kind of insulting if you ask your son

But if you go and ask your parent

Just go and admit that you are drowning in debt

Parents know all of their properties will be passed to their heirs

Or the government will seize it which nobody wants that to happen

Think about using one car only

I remember before having our 2 kids

We were living with one car for a long time

If your kids are grown up – definitely you won’t need 2 cars

Sell the most expensive car and contribute the money to pay your debt

    Talk to your bank

Perhaps your bank can help with any low interest loan

Sometimes, they can extend your home equity line of credit if you have one to be able to pay your debt

Or they can offer you a balance transfer 0% interest for certain period, seize the opportunity and transfer a small amount you can sure to cover during that period

Get rid of stocks or mutual fund under your Roth IRS or TFSA

I recommend you use this step only if your debt interest is greater than 10%

What is the point of earning 9% to 13% on mutual funds while you are paying accumulated interest of more than 10%

Yes you would lose your hard earned tax free money

But it is better than letting interest making your debt grow substantially

Actions to take on how to pay off debt fast

When I got married in 2010
I had to buy a whole new things for my condo
I knew I will be in debt but I had control over it
What made things worse I got laid off and
Me and my wife were living on a single income
We managed to get rid of our debts quickly

I am willing to show you how to pay off debt fast
Let me list below what you can do to pay off debt
Get back on track as a debt free person

    1) Make a list of all your debts

You start by creating an excel sheet
List all of your debts on the left as rows
Create columns for your debts to include for each debt
Minimum payment, interest rate and total amount you owed

Now you can rank your debts based on highest rate
Target to pay these debts first
Also if you can manage to pay small debts to cross them out of your list
This will motivate you and keep you focused on big ones

    2) Set your budget

To setup a good balanced budget
You have to review all your credit cards history
You got to analyze your spending

Some expenses are fixed like rent or mortgage you cannot control them
While other expenses are fluctuating like utilities, groceries and gas
    Track all the fluctuating expenses
Try to come up with reasonable and moderate budget for all these expenses
Do that based on average of ups and downs

I tell you that so you don’t track your expenses during holiday
Which are considered high and apply them all year round
Once you set a realistic budget
Bring envelopes and label them with the expense name

If you are paying some expenses using
    Authorized credit cards payments
Then don’t label envelopes for them

There is a free app which is called
    Goodbudget for Android and iPhone

    3) Set your goals and plans

Do you have a plan on how to pay off debt fast
Have this plan written somewhere in your home
Check it daily and track your progress on the same sheet
Without goals it will be hard to stay on track

Set a due date on how you will finish one debt
If you manage to pay one debt successfully on time
You will be very excited with your small progress
It will boost your enthusiasm to keep you paying more into your debts

    4) Pay with cash

    Stop using credit cards
Although some cash back credit cards rewards you on your purchases
Problem is with you using your credit cards

If you cannot control spending on your credit cards
    Leave them at home
Only bring your debit card with you for emergencies

    5) Lower your spending

Cut fast food and dinning out
You have to endure some sacrifices

    Stop buying what you want
    Get only what you need

There are so many things to cross from your buying list and
Still put its money to pay your debt
Like buying new clothes, accessories and shoes

If you stop your daily drive thru coffee
You will save around $15$ to $20 weekly

Just a thought that came to me
Open a new saving account if you don’t have one
Imagine paying for your coffee and
Pay its amount to your saving account
Pay the accumulated amount at the end of each month to one of your debt

    6) Pay more for debts with high interest rate

Pay high interest rate first as
You don’t want accrued interest to get accumulated
Your plan is to pay less in term of interest charges

At the same time some people debate to pay
The smallest balance to keep you motivated
I would say pay the small balance for one debt
That can be paid in one or two months
While still paying most of your payment into the highest interest debt

    7) Finish paying lowest balance first

If you have 2 similar debts with equal interest rates
Finish first the lower one to give yourself a relief

Although I mentioned above to pay the debt
With the highest interest and now I tell you to
Pay lowest balance first, you get confused
    Actually this is a debate

In my opinion if you have a small balance
That can be completed in one or two months
I would share the monthly payment between
Paying the 2 debts with highest interest rate and lowest balance

I will give an example with numbers here
If you have debt A for $11,000 with 19% interest
While debt B for $600 with 5.5% interest
If you are committed to pay $800 monthly
    I would allocate $300 towards debt B
While paying $500 towards debt A
In 2 months I will finish debt B and move to debt A

    8) Double up on payments

If you finished paying one debt like paying one credit credit in full
Congratulations and keep up the good momentum
Allocate the same amount towards another credit card
    To accelerate finishing it faster

Any extra payment will go towards your principal
Make sure you are not paying just the interest
Your payment has to cover the interest plus part of principal
If you pay only the interest unfortunately
You are not decreasing your loan or credit card

    9) Pay down debts using bonuses

Whenever you get year end bonus or
Tax income coming from your tax returns
Take all the money and put it towards your debts

Also most of us get paid biweekly
This means in any fiscal year
    You have 2 extra payments
Look at your calendar and check all the paychecks
Usually it is Fridays and see
When you will get the next extra paycheck
You can use it to pay more into your debts

    10) Pay more than the minimum payments

It will take you forever if you are paying just the minimum
I have one of my credit cards on its statement
It has a statement under the balance that says
If you pay the minimum only
It will take your 9 years to pay all your balance
This amount is less than a thousand

It is completely insane to pay minimum only
Doing that you will be paying the interest

    11) Get rid of extra things by selling them

Check around your belongings from electronics to furniture
There are so many things you can sell and still feel you didn’t lose much

There is nothing wrong about that
Don’t take it personally and get the feeling that you went broke
I managed to sell toys that are in good condition

If you have 2 laptops but only use one
You can sell your items on Facebook Marketplace
In your nearby community or you can sell your items on eBay
But eBay requires extra skills to learn how to create a listing

    12) Cancel unnecessary subscriptions

I remember I looked one at PayPal subscriptions
    I found 2 unused subscriptions
    Which I cancelled right away

Most credit cards statements have beside
All transactions an icons to indicate
If a transaction is a recurring type
Go through all your recurring types and see what you can get rid off

    What about your cable
You can switch to free or paid online streaming service
What about your GYM membership and yard maintenance

    13) Lower your mandatory subscriptions

For all mandatory subscriptions like cell phone plan
Check if you are paying for extra services and not using them or
Paying for a service but using part of it
Like paying for 10 GB of data
When you are not using more than 3 GB monthly

    You can save good money
If you apply this on all mandatory ones

    14) Focus to be satisfied with what you got

To be satisfied you have to stop comparing yourself to others
Don’t look on what they got and you don’t
What they got should not concern you
Also practice doing these things in your life

    Write down your daily gratitude
You have to recognize all the good things
You got in your life each day

Be flexible and accept change in your life
One in a while always think about people’s point of view
Try to think about it and accept it

Look at things in new perspective
Turn any negative situation into a positive one
Perhaps being in debt will teach you to live frugal life
I mentioned earlier to look for the cause of
What got you into debts in the first place

    15) Avoid new debt

It doesn’t make sense to create new debt
While you still paying your current one
If you plan to buy a new car
    You don’t need to that
Used car will also do the work for you

    16) Analyze your shopping habits

    Sometimes you need to think
    What makes you spend money
If you find that you hang out with your friends and
This triggers you to spend money
    Now you know the cause

Remember I am not trying to make your life hard
At least you should have fun
But find a way to limit the habit that makes you spend money

Also check your credit card statements
See if you can spot any extra thing to stop buying

    17) Find a way to increase your income

    If you increase your income
You can pay your debt fast
There are so many ways online to make an extra income
Check how to make an extra $200 in one day

    18) Volunteer for a good cause

This will help you feel how lucky you are with what you have
It will also help you save money especially
If you hang out with your friends a lot

Also if I cannot ask you to denote or I will be insane
I would ask you to denote from your health
    By doing service in charities

    19) Overcome your addiction

If you are a smoker or you buy alcohol a lot
It is now your decision to stop your addiction and
Save money towards paying your debts

If not, think about your addiction from different perspective
Some people are addicted to buying clothes especially shoes
I know a friend who is really addicted to buying watches

    If you stop your addiction
You will get self satisfaction that
You have done your best to fight your debts

    20) Focus on your needs and not your wants

    You have to differentiate between
What you need and what you want
    Forget about your debts now
Just focusing on chasing your wants
This will drop your level of happiness
    As you feel deprived

If you want to be happy
Focus only on what you have

    21) Learn basic money management and investments

You have to understand the basics
Like the bad effect of compound interest
How to calculate the matured value of initial money after investment
I see lot of people they don’t understand those basic money management

That’s why I recommend you to read my post about personal financial literacy

I recommend you read used books for the budgeting habit or Financial peace planner by Dave Ramsey

Also I recommend reading about 15 best marketing books of all time

    22) Be positive and stay motivated

Number one problem with any people under debts
They don’t believe that they can be debts free one day
Usually because they have low income

Getting despaired will make you lose hope
If you lose hope you will not be able to overcome your debts

    23) Speak to a credit counselor for free

    in US and Canada
There are free credit counselor offered by the government
You can listen to their advice
    Don’t assume you know everything
Always there can be few things
    You are not aware of

    24) Get a consolidated loan

Sometimes credit cards send regular mail
Offering you to get use of low interest rate for up to 9 months or even a year
This is considered a very good change to transfer all of your credits from other credit cards
You will be able to consolidate into one card
This will motivate you to pay your debt faster as you will be paying more on principal than interest

    25) Refinance your mortgage

    If you own your home
You still has a good opportunity to apply for home equity loan with low interest rate
You pay all of your credits and then work later to pay this line of credit

The idea is to get all debts under low interest rate
It happens that home equity loans are the lowest rates

    26) Save on groceries

You still can save a lot of money on grocery
You never imagine how much you can save
All savings should be applied to your debts

What to do after you pay off debt fast

The feeling of overcoming your debts is completely joyful
    You restore your confidence back

It is not as you think
Because if are not donating to a religious place or a charity on a monthly basis
Then it would be feasible to go for this amount
Why? on average the sum of monthly donations for average household income
It is around $7,800 per household
If you save an extra $2,400 and you will reach the $10,000

How to complete the 52 weeks money challenge

When it comes to saving money
    We have different mentality here
I personally like the decreasing method
Because it makes me feel like
I am getting a relief over time

Let me describe below each method
To see which one suits you

    Equal Method

    Some people are very systematic
They like to stick to a static plan that never changes
    Equal method is for those
Who prefer to cut specific amount every week
It works best with money saving challenge for
Amounts like $3000 as you save $57 weekly,
With $5000 you save $96 and with 10,000 you save $192 weekly

    Ascending Method

This method works perfect for $1,378 , $2,756 and $3,000
You may prefer to start low and in your mind
You set money aside to cover the increase of saving challenge
As you approach the end of the year

    Descending Method

    With the decreasing method
You assume a couple of things
When you get bonus on the first or second paycheck
This is a good change to use to pay several weeks on high amount
Going to the end of year for the Christmas time
You plan to go slow as it is time for exchanging gifts

    Erratic Method

If you are of this mentality
Who hates any kind of obligations
You would like to keep it loose
I still recommend you to write it down

I don’t want you to keep it loose and at the same time
Writing down a plan you still be tied to a plan
What I meant is that most of us in North America are getting paid biweekly
This means we have 2 extra paychecks during the year

If you plan to start in January
I don’t think you will be erratic on when you will start
Look at the upcoming fiscal year and manage to check
How many payday checks moving during the 52 weeks
For most of us it is on Fridays
Keep in mind to pay big amount on these extra paycheck days

Also plan to pay big amount on the week you get your bonus
Don’t forget the tax season if your household get tax returns
In your case, I would say move all the money to your money saving challenge

Different plans in the 52 Weeks Money challenge

Although I am a big believer in saving money
I rather recommend to start with low level plan first
If you go with the $10,000 and you break it
You will lose confident pursuing the money saving challenge again
So take it easy if you have never done it before

52 weeks saving plan for $1,378 in ascending method

Let me tell you why $1,378
This number came with saving one dollar for week 1
Increase it by extra dollar every consecutive week
This means you save 2 dollars on week 2 followed by 3 dollars for week 3 and so on

If we do the math as shown below by week 52 you will accumulate $1,378

money saving plan for $1,378- 52 weeks money challenge

52 weeks saving plan for $1,378 in descending method

Same as above but I reversed the savings
This means I save more on week 1 and
I decrease the amount by 1 till the end of the year

Both ascending and descending methods in the $1,378 challenge are typical
    I don’t think saving $52 in week 1 is a big deal

52 weeks saving plan for $2,756 in ascending/descending methods

I double the $1 saving money challenge
Which I think it is still durable
Again I combined both plans as they are similar to above

With Increasing you start saving $2 dollars on week one
Increase it by extra 2 dollars every consecutive week
Plan ahead especially in Halloween and December time
Usually spending is higher due to holiday season

With decrease plan you pay the highest payment first of
$104 on week 1 and decrease it as you go along
This is my favorite plan as you start high
Then every week you get a relief

    money saving plan for $2,756

52 weeks saving plan for $3,000 in ascending/descending

If you make it on $2,756 then you would be able to go for $3,000 without any challenges

I added an extra $4 to all weeks under $2,756 plan
This will come up to $2964 with a difference of $36 to reach the $3,000
Just pay an extra $3 dollars for week 4, 8, 12 till week 48

money saving plan for $3,000 - 52 weeks money save challenge

52 weeks saving plan for $5,000 in equal method

In the $5,000 I couldn’t add like $40 to every week of the previous $3,000 plan
The amount here is significantly big
It is better to approach it in a wave technique

You start with $40 for week 1 add extra $40 for the next 4 consecutive weeks
    Week 1 = $40, week 2 = $80, week 3 = $120 and week 4 = $160

Then you drop back again to $40 on week 5 and repeat the cycle again till you reach $160 for week 8 and so on

By the way this will accumulate $5,200 by the end of the year
That’s why I modified the plan to keep it till week 12

    money saving plan for $5,000

52 weeks saving plan for $10,000 in erratic method

    I couldn’t find a systematic way around the $10,000
The reason is if I double the $5,000 weekly payments
It will be $80, $160, $240, $320 which is very tough for any family

I found that if you get bonus for year end
Plus if you collect a decent tax return
Along with the 2 extra paychecks during the fiscal year
I managed to pay $400 around those weeks
Dropping the amount to $50 or $75 the following week

I don’t know but it is something I wouldn’t do it
But again it all depends on your household income
If you get an annual bonus as some companies pay up to $8,000
Plus if you get a good tax return on tax season

    money saving plan for $10,000
52 weeks saving plan for $10,000 in erratic method

What other challenges beside the 52 weeks money challenge

    Again as I said above
Although I tried to show that the $1,378 plan saving $1 on week 1
To sound like it is easy and affordable for everyone

Some people cannot save weekly of around $50 especially
    When reaching the holiday time
Even if you reverse it with saving 52$ on week 1
It will not help if you are try to recover from
Extra spending during November and December

You can pursue other challenges like

104 weeks saving plan for $1,378 in ascending/descending methods

If you successfully complete the 52 weeks saving plan for $1,378
Instead of going for another 52 weeks saving plan for $2,756
You can continue on the same $1 every week for another 52 weeks
This will accumulate a total of $5,460 at the end of the second year

26 weeks biweekly saving plan for $1,378 in ascending/descending methods

According to most of the us we get paid biweekly
This means if you pay the contributions when you get paid
You have to pay 2 weeks combined
For example week 1 you pay $3
Which is 1$ for week 1 plus 2$ for week 2
Week 3 you pay 7 which is $3 for week 3 plus $4 for week 4 and so on

    The no spending challenge

    This is completely different challenge
You are not challenged to save money
But you are asked to stop spending
What about if you spend on your basic needs not on your wants

Perhaps you have to consider saving on basic things and
Stop spending on extra unnecessary items like

    • Apply the grocery saving ideas
    • Fast food and restaurants
    • Expensive cell phone plans especially if you are not using your plan to its maximum
    • Cable if you can survive on Netflix and online streaming
    • Unnecessary subscriptions if you forgot to cancel any of them
    • New clothes and shoes
    • Brewing your own coffee instead of buying expensive one
    • GYM membership as you can go through your training by watching YouTube video
    • Extra alcohol and Juice as I cannot tell you to completely stop alcohol at least make up your mind on your alcohol consumption
    • Expensive dates where you pay for baby sitters
    • Car wash
    • Yard maintenance and learn to do it yourself
    • Scented candles and air fresheners
    • Replace expensive self care items with cheap one
    • Extra toys
    • Buy used books from Amazon

You have to go through your credit cards and analyze your spending

    The spare change challenge

Get a piggy bank and save any coins
    With mobile apps trends
You can download many apps to
Round up your change into an investing account

It will get linked to your credit cards
    If a cappuccino is $3.25
It will withdraw $0.75 to the app and invests it

Apps that can help you do that are
WealthSimple Invest and Save for Android and iPhone
Also Mylo round up your purchases for Android and iPhone

How do you prepare your budget?

Before I finish I think it’s good to cover few points on how to prepare your budget

1- Start by setting up your financial goals

Like what do you want to achieve by writing all you want to achieve

Why you want to save money? what you would do with that money?

financial goals from ultimate budget binder

2- Figure out how much you earn

I meant here your net income as known as your take home pay

3- Track your spending for the future by writing them when they happen

The best way to speculate how much you will spend on each category is to get all the expenses which were already made from your debt and credit cards

Collect 3-6 months and come up with average

4- Make a plan to track your spending daily or every 3 days and to look at your monthly budget to assess if you are on track or not

5- Adjust your spending habits according to your current status

6- Review your budget at end of the month to see your progress and how to fix any issues in future months
