8 Amazing Tips Living On A Budget Without Being Wretched

Lot of families dream about living on a budget or living in a budget

It ends up they learn how to start budgeting but fail to stick to it

I spoke before about common budgeting mistakes for those who tried budgeting

Let me show you here how to live on a budget and get used to it

    Living on a budget
    Living on a budget

    1- Pay yourself first

Best way on how to live on a tight budget is to save money before you spend it

It is called Pay yourself first because you pay yourself before you pay your expenses

If you pay yourself at last then all expenses will eat your income

But with what you have you will definitely adapt yourself to pay for groceries and flexible expenses according to what you have left

    2- Get out of debt

Nothing worse than being in debt

I am not talking about mortgage

But any other loans or accumulated credit cards amounts

Think about it every month you pay money for nothing in return just to pay loans

When you get out of debt you have a high chance of staying within your budget

I recommend to build an emergency fund to protect you from falling in debt again

3- Sharing your budget with your family

I like Dave Ramsey’s expression in his Total Money Makeover book

He talks about a nerd partner while the other one is a free spirit

You have to bring your spouse together on your budget and agree on numbers

It is very frustrating to build while your partner destroy or vice versa

    4- Track your daily spending

One of the proper steps to start living on a tight budget is to track your daily spending

If you find yourself spending extra one day then you can tie your hand next days

Nothing is better than having all the amounts in front of you

Good news you can download this weekly spending for free from my products page

5- Write down clear financial goals

You are creating a budget for a reason

That reason is not to make sure your income covers your expenses

It is to save for retirement and invest the money you save

That’s why I encourage everyone to write their financial goals

You can buy this financial goals roadmap with a bundle of all what you would need for managing your budget from my download page

6- Make a room for entertainment

Living within a budget doesn’t mean cutting all fun from your life

You have to consider a room for entertainment like dinning out and going to theater

Also local travel is good use of the money allocated for entertainment

Be flexible and make extra room in summer for fun

7- Skipping seasonal expenses and tax income

Don’t do the mistake of missing seasonal expenses and never plan for it

That’s why I created a sheet with prerecorded expenses in my budget bundle

    8- Estimate monthly expenses accurately

Part of your success on how to start living on a budget is to estimate the monthly expenses accurately

How? to estimate your expenses you have to collect 3 to 6 months of existing credit card statements and debit transactions

If you are using cash then your best option is to get all of your receipts

Look at your spending then sum all of your expenses for specific item then divide them by the number of months

For example if you sum all groceries totals for the last 6 months

    $485 + $535 + $405 + $565 + $505 + $360 = $2855 / 6 ~ $475

You can use $475 as your grocery budget

Conclusion on living on a budget

Living on a budget isn’t about restriction—it’s about intention.

When you take control of your money, you gain the power to make it work for you instead of the other way around.

Whether your goal is to get out of debt, build savings, or simply stop living paycheck to paycheck, budgeting gives you the clarity and confidence to reach it.

It may take some time to adjust, and you might face setbacks along the way, but every step you take toward managing your money better is a step toward financial freedom.

With a solid budget, smart choices, and consistent habits, you can live well, save more, and reduce stress—proving that living on a budget isn’t just possible, it’s empowering.

  • How to Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck – Success & Freedom

How to Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck – Success & Freedom

Do you need to stop living paycheck to paycheck?

According to a survey carried by CareerBuilder a leading job site related to American workers

They collected statistics related to debts, budgeting and living paycheck to paycheck

78% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck

The survey above is long and detailed but what really grabbed my attention

28% of workers earning between 50 K and 99 K and need to stop living paycheck to paycheck

3 out of 4 surveyed say they are in debt

While in Canada, according to survey conducted by Angus Reid on a sample of 2,047 Canadians

It showed that 53% of Canadians need to stop living paycheck to paycheck

    That’s really a devastating news

This brings me to talk about this phenomena and to start with

    stop living paycheck to paycheck
    Stop living paycheck to paycheck

What is meant by living paycheck to paycheck

Simply this term means you cover all of your expenses with your income

You desperately waiting for the next paycheck usually biweekly to continue to cover your expenditures

You are in a continuous cycle of no money left over and no savings to make

What are the causes of living paycheck to paycheck

Don’t every think that those workers who are broke waiting for next paycheck are those who are on low income jobs

Check above 28% of people earning 50K to 99K are still struggling to make ends meet

Here are all the reasons that cause this phenomena

They don’t include the low income jobs as a cause

Is this a surprise to you? read the first cause about cost of living

Your cost of living is beyond your income

I will always mention this fact over and over from my personal life experience

Me and my wife were living with enough buffer to save and more room to enjoy our lives with a combined income of 52% less than what we currently earn

I know what went wrong, we moved to a bigger place with extra mortgage to pay

Bottom line, check your bills including your mortgage/rent and make your math

I want you to calculate the percentage of your mortgage/rent to your income

I bet you that a few people know their percentages

Banks still lend you for a mortgage that can eat up to 42% of your income

They don’t care if you understand the consequence of your action

What is important now for banks maintaining a safe threshold for borrowers to keep paying their mortgages

    Keeping up with the Joneses

Keeping up with the Joneses is Dave Ramsey’s expression from his book Total Money Makeover

What he means is that not all relatives and friends have equal incomes

This is part of life to have filthy rich, rich, middle class and poor people

What is inappropriate is not saying I cannot afford it to friends and families when they ask you to hang out for dinners or pubs so many times more than you can handle it

Or paying for expensive gifts in return of what they bought on your birthdays and anniversaries and you try to complement them the same way

We bought the lie, we lived our lives according to the standards set to “Keep up with the Joneses” and it turned out that they broke and living in debt tooI love this quote from Dave Ramsey’s total money makeover

    Saving is not a priority

In other words, you are not paying yourself first

Paying yourself first is the automation of the saving process by deducting a percentage or amount from every paycheck to transfer to another saving account

You don’t do it but ask you bank to set it up for you

All banks can do this automation if you ask them to do so

You are not tracking your spending

Without tracking your spending, it is almost impossible of detecting where your money is spent

You can track your spending by following these 2 steps

Step 1 – if you are initially tracking your expenses for the first time

You need to get all of your credit cards statements for the past 3 – 6 months and investigate where you spend your income

Almost all credit cards companies allow you to save your statements in CSV format

You can open it in spreadsheet application like Microsoft Excel, Libre OfficeGoogle Sheet and Open office

Step 2 – If you already analysed your spending and want to stay up on track

In this case you can use a weekly spending sheet to keep track of your spending

    Weekly spending plan

    Not having an emergency fund

Building an emergency fund is very essential, you cannot predict when it will rain

In Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover book

He uses the expression rainy day from his grandma where she used to tell him this quote

You need a coat for those rainy day and it is going to rain for sureDAVE RAMSEY’S grandma quote from TOTAL MONEY MAKEOVER

Although having an emergency where you need to pay for your car repair or for urgent medical or dental bill not covered by your insurance can cause unexpected disruption in your monthly bills

In a typical year expect to have one or more of these urgent unplanned emergencies to pay for

They can put you in debt if you are not ready with an emergency fund

Relying on credit cards for your lifestyle

I am not against using credit cards to pay for your daily expenses

What I do I stick to creating my family budget where I can control myself to use my credit cards to pay for what I planned in my monthly budget

There are people who use their credit cards to pay haphazardly for anything and everything

Not setting any financial goals or plans

The only thing that motivates you to save and help you to achieve your financial goals is setting a clear financial plans

If you have a clear plan, saving money will be priority for you and definitely you will find a lot of room to cut in your flexible and discretionary expenses

How to stop the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck

    paycheck to paycheck

    Create your family budget

Don’t be afraid from the term budget, just think about it as a spending plan

If you like the spending plan term, they are the same

I made it super easy to build spending plan for your household income

Just get a cup of coffee, tea or whatever drink you like, follow the link above and give it only half an hour

Finally you will be set to overcome the fear of creating a family budget

    Build an emergency fund

I discussed in a previous post how to build an emergency fund as fast as possible

If you have debt to fight, you need at least the baby step for saving $1,000 for an emergency fund before you move to your next debt step

    Sell belongings you don’t need

You want to complete the emergency fund step as soon as possible

If it requires to sell few of your belongings like a precious watch or rug in your house using Facebook MarketplaceCraigslist or even eBay

If you scan you house, definitely you will find so many stuff to sell for quick cash

    Get rid of your debt

If you still have not built your emergency fund yet

I ask you to do so before you start fighting your debt

If you are paying few loans and credit card debts monthly, I want you to think for a moment how to stay motivated and encouraged to continue paying your debt

The best way to achieve successful result is to sort all of your debts from smallest to largest regardless of their interest rates

It is called the snowball effect, start by paying small debt first when you finish it, move the energy towards the larger debt in line

What is more important in the snowball process is to get rid of anything causing some of your debts to stay like selling your luxurious car instead of paying its loan

Increase your income with side hustle

You may be on low income and that’s why it is tight with you

But are you going to stay like that for a long time?

I always believe to some extent that earning more money is based on what you know and not based on your college degree

For example, I knew lot of people who used to work with minimum salary and they insisted to study for few months to change their future

It is out of topic to discuss that but there are so many certificates that can definitely move your career to the next level like project management or CMA

Please read my post how to make 200 dollars a day to get more ideas of income you were not aware of

    Live below your means

Sometimes the problem lies in the way you live and spend your money

I discussed earlier some people are paying more than 42% of their incomes for mortgage/rent

There is nothing wrong if you are very tight and single to live with your parents and pay for your room

Or if you don’t accept it, downsize your rent or find a roommate

    Cut from your expenses

Expenses are categorized into fixed like mortgage/rent and insurance, flexible like groceries and discretionary like your morning take away coffee

You have to sort out all of your flexible and discretionary and sacrifice some of your expenses to save money for the future

    Start saving for your retirement

Time flies and you have to plan for saving up to 15% of your income for retirement

If your company matches up to 6% of your contribution then saving 6% you get 12% saved in your retirement saving account, you have no excuse to save the 15% now

If not, do your best for reaching the 10% saving into a retirement saving account invested in long term mutual funds

How to save money and stop living paycheck to paycheck

If you expect to read something super duper natural on saving money with low income

Unfortunately you will read a regular grandma’s advice like

The reverse budget method – Pay yourself first

The reverse budget method is also called pay yourself first because your prioritize your saving plans over other items on your spending plan

Sometimes it is called spending plan after saving

I will add here my little twist regarding how to pay yourself first

On your paycheck day, money goes into your checking account

If you arrange with your bank to auto transfer any amount to a saving account

You would be tempted to take the money back from your saving account to avoid that you have to set an auto transfer to mutual fund saving account

Instantly your new allocated amount will be used in buying mutual funds shares where you need to keep the money for long term

    Apply the half payment method

This half payment method is very easy to apply and it helps to save money too

Take all your fixed bills like mortgage/rent, car and home insurances, car loan, electricity and heating gas – based on the last 3 – 6 months average and divide all of them by 2

For example if mortgage/rent is $800, car insurance is $150, electricity is $60, heating gas is $100 divide them by 2

If your biweekly income is $1,800 then deduct $400 for mortgage/rent+ $75 for electricity + $30 for electricity + $50 for heating gas = $1,245 leftover

The half payment method helps you to manage your income properly as all bills are deducted monthly and you get paid biweekly

You will be able to save money because if you have your bills distributed throughout the month

You may have one paycheck goes to bills and next paycheck your priorities will be messed up

But if you plan to equalize your paychecks by deducting the portions that go to bills

You will have paychecks with equal amount to manage

    The cash envelope budget method

The cash envelope budget method requires you to stop using your credit cards and replace them with cash for all money you assigned in your budget for flexible expenses like groceries

Once you finish the cash in any envelope you stop buying it, you have to be very diligent and manage to count what is left in your envelopes to make sure you have enough cash to cover your expenses

It is between you and me

I attempted working with the cash envelope budget method before but I couldn’t adapted it in my lifestyle

I monitor my credit cards cautiously to avoid any deviation to my budget plan

Conclusion on how to stop living paycheck to paycheck

    It is never too late

Everyday of your life you have a chance to save money for the future especially for your retirement

Don’t count on your government for the pension amount you will get

Start today by learning how to create your household budget and building an emergency fund

    Cheapest way to live

    Cheapest way to live

Cheapest way to live in the following places

Imagine if you skip your mortgage or rent from your paycheck

How much money you would save?

I bet you a lot, if I am not mistaken easily from 25% up to 45%

Since it is a dream to skip paying your mortgage or rent, you can try the following

    Live in an RV

A friend of mine spent three days in an RV with his family

He reported that it was very pleasant experience

But can you live for long time in an RV?

Definitely it is one of the cheapest way to live during your accommodation

So instead of renting an RV for vacation you buy it and live in it

The average cost of RV compared to buying a home is incomparable

Plus you don’t even need a car as you can drive your RV instead

    Live in a truck

Next to living in an RV comes the idea of living in a truck

Although any truck has less space compared to RV

But with few money it is feasible to turn your truck into a home

    Living in a bus

Another cheapest way to live frugally is to stay in a bus

Recently I have seen in a TV show like HGTV many people converting their buses to small living areas

    Live in a storage container

Similar to living in a bus you can live in a storage container

Keep in mind here that container is wider but shorter than a bus

At the same time, definitely you would need to buy a car for transportation

    Living in a mobile home

Living in mobile home is one of the cheapest way to live and save money

The price of any mobile home is a fraction of what you pay in regular home

    Live in a duplex

Duplex is another way of buying affordable house

You just have to be careful as you can lose money if you buy the wrong mobile home

You buy a house that is split into two units known as duplex

Definitely duplex is lower in mortgage or rent

Live in a home and rent basement and few rooms

You can also live in your home and rent your basement

Or if you have 2 storeys you can rent a storey to reduce your monthly mortgage

I know renting your basement is practical as you will have more privacy

    Living with a roommate

Sharing your place with a roommate is one way to reduce your rent by 50%

I know not everyone like to do it but it is one of the cheapest way to live with someone

But definitely it is healthy to live with someone even if you don’t talk much

    Living with your parents

If you’re single and want to save money nothing is wrong to live with your parent

You can tell your parents that you plan to contribute with money

Tell your parents to accept that as it will help you to manage your commitment

Cheapest way to live with parents
Cheapest way to live with parents

Tips to live frugally on your own or with your family

I covered above all possible ways to live in different places and save money

Now it is time to cover cheapest methods to live frugally

    1) Practice the 30 days rule on non essential items

30 days rule simply is a practice of refraining yourself buying any big items for almost a month

For example, buying a new Apple watch if you wait for 30 days perhaps you would change your mind as you already have a regular watch

    2) Setup a plan for the Tax refund season

If you are an employee most probably you may get a tax refund

Question is, do you have a plan on where to use that money?

I suggest to put this extra money into your retirement account

You plan for future, also get an extra tax refund next year as you lower your income

    3) Maximize the transfer to your retirement account

Another way to live cheaply is to check if your company offers a contribution to your retirement account up to a certain percentage

I beg you to seize this opportunity and match the maximum contribution your company will match

You can never imagine how much you will make in 5 or 10 years

    4) Trick yourself that you did not get a bonus

One of the cheapest way to liMost companies offer bonuses at end of the year

Cheapest way to live is to assume you don’t get any bonus and use the money into an investment account

Perhaps you can invest the bonus money in your retirement account

Cheapest way to live - pretend you did not get a bonus
Cheapest way to live – pretend you did not get a bonus

    5) Automate to transfer money to your saving account

Do you want to save money but get tight on your monthly budget?

Sometimes you miss the chance to save for the current month

Why don’t you ask your bank to cut a specific percentage or amount to auto transfer money from every paycheck to your saving or retirement account

    6) Get rid of your change in Piggy bank

Do you have change in your pocket not sure what to do with?

You can live cheaply and use a piggy bank

Make it a habit to drop any change there

Cheapest way to live by saving your change
Cheapest way to live by saving your change

    7) Use apps to transfer your change to an investment account

Nowadays with many mobile apps you can invest easily

What you can do is to round up any payments you make with your credit card or debit

Then you move this rounded up amount to an investment account

You can do that using Acorns and Stash in US and Wealth Simple in Canada

    8) Find a buddy to challenge you

Some people find the best way to save is to turn saving into a challenge

Find a buddy who likes to challenge you and go for a saving challenge together

It would be fun and you can start with 52 weeks money saving challenge

    9) Use a cash reward credit card and save its cashback

One of the cheapest way to live frugally is to use credit cards to pay for expenditure

That’s why I decided to use a cashback credit card that gives me money back on renewal date

I maximized my cashback by paying an annual fee to get more cashback

    10) Create a budget

I will repeat it over and over

If you don’t have budget it is time to start a new budget

Just see all your expenses during the last 3 months on your debit and credit cards

Come up with realistic budget and keep tracking of your spendings

That’s why I came up with undated ultimate budget binder plus current and 2 upcoming years as shown below

    11) Analyze your spending

One of the cheapest way to live is by knowing how much you spend in each category is the key to successful budget

I found you have to keep track of your expenses on a daily and weekly basis

You can use the below sheet for free on my products page

    cheapest way to live
    Cheapest way to live

    12) Make extra income by starting a side hustle

You can optimize your budget to a certain limit

But your income is always the same and you have a limit to decrease your expenses

What would be best is to find a way to work on a side hustle to add more income

    13) Refinance your mortgage or negotiate your rent

Sometimes before your mortgage term ends you can negotiate for a better rate

You can live cheaply by negotiating your price before renewal date

If you are renting you can negotiate with your landlord at least not to get an increase

    14) Try the 52 weeks money saving challenge

I knew recently about the 52 weeks money saving challenge

It is an exciting challenge and cheapest way to live by use this money at year end towards your emergency fund

    15) Analyze, negotiate and bundle your recurring bills

I have a friend of mine who was paying around $140 for a cable and internet

That’s way too much, I told him to call their billing and inform them that you are shopping around

To my wonder, his bill was slashed to $90

That’s why I encourage everyone to negotiate his bill as cheapest way to live frugally

Good news is that you can use AskTrimBillSmartBillCutterzBillFixers and Bill Shark in US

And if you are in Canada, you can use Bill Busters

    16) Cut cable subscription

I know there are so many household who are not aware of IPTV

IPTV is simply subscribing to TV channels over the internet

You can expect to pay around $30 to $50 a year

If you compare it with what you pay monthly on your cable – there is no comparison

    17) Cancel magazine subscriptions

You may be paying $20 a month for specific magazine you really love

But the question is, do you really free time to read it?

I bet you that you keep it for some time then you trash it

Think about it and if that’s the case try to get rid of it

    18) Replace your home phone with VOIP phone

I believe having cell phone is enough for anybody to reach you

But because VOIP phone is cheap nowadays around $3 a month

I use a VOIP phone at home

Bottom line to live cheaply with home phone I urge everybody to use VOIP

    19) Set reminders to pay bills and credit cards

I found the best way to organize your bills payments and never miss one is to set up a day every month to pay your credit cards and utilities

You don’t want to pay late fees for missing any bill

    20) Never finance anything

There are some stores who offer to pay for 18 or 24 months with no interest

If that is the case you can buy your big ticket item when you get this offer

Otherwise one of the cheapest way to live is by not pay interest for buying big ticket item like TV or Fridge

You can have a specific saving account that you start saving any amount into it and to use it for buying any appliances that get broke at home

    21) Use HSA or FSA

HSA stands for Health Spending Account while FSA stands for Flexible Spending Account

These accounts can pay for any unpaid portion on your health account

For example, you can use HSA to pay for the remaining 20% dental bill not covered by insurance

I think this is one of the cheapest way to live without medical bills

    22) Pay mortgage and student loans biweekly or even weekly

Do you know if you set your mortgage or student loan payment to a shorter period you will pay less interest?

Yes paying your mortgage weekly or biweekly will cost you less interest than monthly

    23) Look for no fees bank accounts

I know it is a lot of hassle to switch from one bank to another

Take an offer from one bank and tell your bank about it

If this offer really exists your bank will do their best to match it

Anyway one of these offers is to look for no fee checking account

    24) Write your grocery list

One of the best thing I discovered is grocery list app called AnyList

It integrates with Google home and Alexa

When I run out of grocery item, I call Alexa and ask her to add this item to my grocery list

If Alexa confirms that my item was added, then I use the app in my grocery store

You can show and hide your crossed item by using the eye view icon

You can add multiple items one time

Also there is a meal planning feature

I found a cheap way to live frugally when I discovered AnyList

    25) Buy the no brand supermarket items

Without any doubt one of the cheapest way to live frugally by buying no brand always cheaper

To be fair there are so many no brand items that you can buy and save money on grocery

    26) Buy grocery items in bulk

Some grocery items will never expire like flour, rice, sugar, salt and all spices

One of the cheapest way to live frugally is by always stock big quantities when you find them on sale

    27) Buy essential products from grocery stores

Milk and eggs are essential especially if you have children

I go for my grocery shopping once a week

So I always keep track of milk and eggs to make sure I have enough for the week

If you want to live cheaply then never buy these items from convenience stores or gas stations

    28) Search for cheap groceries using coupon apps

I know it is hard and challenging to search all flyers to find deals and coupons

Not anymore with apps like Flipp or reebee as these apps do the heavy work for you

You can search any item and it will find the cheapest price across all grocery stores

    29) Get cash back using grocery apps

Yes you can collect money when using these apps like IbottaCheckout 51Receipt Hog and Krazy Coupon Lady

They all work similarly where you scan your receipts and get cash back

    30) Stop buying bottled water

I don’t see anything wrong drinking water tap

Yes I have to admit that I buy bottled water from time to time

But only when I am going camping or on the beach

    31) Buy from Supermarkets that do price match

Sometimes you can find a deal in one grocery store
